B is for Back Pain

It's not quite the back pain I had in mind from this pregnancy.

I went to sleep Tuesday night with the feeling the either Baby Taffy was laying directly on my bladder or I was beginning to feel the onset of a UTI.  I was very uncomfortable but finally was able to go to sleep.  The next morning, I got up and got ready for work.  I got to work and it became more evident to me after visiting the bathroom about every 10 minutes with very little result even after drinking fluids that it wasn't just the baby laying on my bladder.

I called the doctor's office and the nurse said she'd get me some labs scheduled and then we'd go from there.  I went to pick up the lab form on my lunch break but they were closed for lunch.  I came back to work and shortly after, my back started hurting and progressively got worse and worse.  I got back up to the doctor's office to get my form at about 1:45 and asked to talk with the nurse.  By that time, I was in tears my back was hurting so bad.  The nurse practioner came in and saw me and determined she thought I had kidney stones.

They called in some pain meds and sent me over to Hendrick for an ultrasound on my kidneys.  I texted Russell and he came directly from work to the hospital.  I could hardly breathe and could not get comfortable while we were waiting in the waiting room.  He went and got the pain meds prescription filled at the hospital pharmacy and finally about 30 minutes later I was getting some relief from the pain.

The ultrasound tech finished the ultrasound of both kidneys and was about to scan the bladder.  She asked when we got to see the baby next.  I told her we had the sonogram scheduled for next week.  She asked if we wanted a little sneak peak -- and of course we did!  So, in the middle of the craziness, we got to see Taffy moving about!  I wish I had been feeling better to really enjoy it, but it was good to have some reassurance that he/she is moving and his/her heartrate is good, etc.  As of yesterday, the baby is breech and his/her legs were in the way, so we couldn't get a look at if it is boy or girl.  Hopefully next week he/she will cooperate.  I will say, Taffy was a busy little bee -- moving around like crazy.

After the ultrasound was complete, Russell took me home to lay down.  As soon as we got home, the doctor's office called with the results from the lab tests and the ultrasound and sure enough, it was kidney stones.  Boo!  Apparently it/they are small enough I can pass them, so time will tell.  Doctor said to drink water until I float away and then take pain meds as needed.  She went ahead and gave me an antibiotic too just in case an infection did form as it often does with kidney stones.

I'm a little sluggish today and have a light ache in my back, but the pain has been nothing close to what I was feeling yesterday.  The meds seem to be helping, thankfully. I tell you, it seems that this pregnancy has been full of unexpected weird feelings, but I know that the end result will be so well worth it all!

  1. Girl I feel your pain! I had kidney stones TWICE when I was 7-8 months pregnant with Alexis. My kidney stones were a result of calcium build up. My doctor told me to stop drinking so much milk! Hope you feel back to normal soon!
